Conversations with Nicole
Published Thursday, 17-Jun-2010 in issue 1173
This coming Sunday is Father’s Day…my dad died years ago of Alzheimer’s…we were not close because I was gay and we never really had closure before he died. Those of you who have loving, accepting parents are truly blessed as many many moms and dads do not accept their GLBT children. Always cherish and celebrate parents who accept and love you unconditionally.
L.A. Pride’s 40th Celebration
What a wonderful three days in L.A. Friday night, I went to a welcoming reception at the Festival grounds with Mayor John Heilman and city officials. Saturday, I was one of the keynote speakers at the “International Transgender Summit” along with San Francisco City Commissioner Cecila Chung, Councilman Jeffrey Prang and Karina Samala, chair of the city’s Transgender Advisory Board. Stopped by Haute Nightclub for a huge lesbian party that was benefit for the Harvey Milk Foundation by PYT Productions. I was at CSN’s first pride parade/march 40 years ago on Hollywood Boulevard. It was great hanging around parade founder Rev. Troy Perry this past weekend and seeing my pal Robin Tyler. It was great talking to Councilmembers John Durran and Jeffrey Prang (thank you for my West Hollywood City’s 26th Anniversary medal). Assembly Speaker John Perez was his usual outgoing self, and I found CNN newscaster Jane Velez-Mitchell to be down to earth and beautiful. It was also wonderful to run into L.A. Latino icon Oscar De La O of Bienstar. It was fabulous to see Sharon and Kelly Osbourne again and I made them both official “Princesses” and gave them crowns to wear (they along with the Imperial Court’s were “Grand Marshals”). The parade was out of this world and I had a great time on the Community Grand Marshal’s float.
Bravo
And thank you to CSW President Rodney Scott, their board and staff for rolling out the red carpet and treating me like a true queen! By the way, I had a talk with “The Abbey” Nightclub owner David, whom told me that have not found a San Diego location but they have not stopped looking.
“People of Color” A Majority in California
As I’ve said before in some of my speeches; “The Golden State is turning Brown” and California is one of the four states where people of color make up the majority, including Texas, New Mexico and the District of Columbia. Nationwide, 35% of all Americans are of color and soon, in the future of our country, the “minorities” will become the majority. Why I bring all this up is because the GLBT community must continue building more bridges and stronger ties with the Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander, African-American and Native-American communities and organizations. The future of GLBT equality depends heavily on this bridge building.
Ask Questions of Your Non-Profits
Just last week I got the official financial statement of a local non-profit organization and boy, was I shocked! For the year 2008-2009 they relieved donations/grants of 12 million dollars and there expenses were about 11 million dollars (mostly salaries and benefits). Needless to say, I will not be sending any further donations their way. During these hard times for everyone, including non-profits, you should and always ask questions about salaries etc. and how much really goes to the mission of the non-profits you support. Make sure your donations and support goes to non-profits who really help people or causes. Ask questions!

Roberto nicloe Ramirez
Yes some of us still remember when you used to said that you were not Latino or Mexican then you realize that you can profit by accepting your roots.

You are always telling people to be transparent, How about you? who pays for you the place where you live? Who pays for the food you eat? Who pays for all the traveling that you write about? How can you claim to donate money if you don’t have a job! the imperial court monies is not yours to live!

David says:

That's enough. I have E-mailed Councilman Gloria's office to launch a full investigation into the Center. If I get no response, I am going to talk to the powers-at-be who monitor non-profits and also the police. I am also hiring a private investigator to find facts about this prejudiced and divisive illiterate who "...has served the last five mayors." This community has suffered without leadership and it is time to find some. Next week I will post a location for anyone who wants to take back their community to meet and discuss ideas about how to improve and move the LGTB (Yes, that's right - Ladies first) - community in the right direction. Anyone who writes in a privileged column about how certain races now rule California should be shut down, and I am going to shut this illiterate fraud down.

Adam says:

Nicole, you are a hypocrite. HYPOCRITE.

Numerous readers have been asking you about who pays for your travel, hotel rooms and meals when attending events all over North America.

Now you are making excessive overheads at non-profits an issue, start by addressing your critics and disclose all the freebies you have recveived in the name of charity

Also, which non-profit are you slamming? Name names so the allegations you make can be verified.

Greg says:

Good points on the fact that the USA will soon be a minority majority and those in the gay community really do need to have a better out reach with said communities.

Kevin says:

It is nice to know that my favorite gossip colmnist has finally jumped on MY band wagon. I've been telling y'all to pay more attention to this communities non-profits for years. However, miss nickey again shows how much of a hipocrite the bitch really is. What IS the organization???

Jun 18, 2010 10:42 AM
Steve Sallis says:

Yes, Nicole, which non-profit are you talking about?

Jun 18, 2010 12:09 PM
Adam says:

Nicole stated "you should and always ask questions about salaries etc. and how much really goes to the mission of the non-profits you support. Make sure your donations and support goes to non-profits who really help people or causes. Ask questions!"

This reader is taking your advice. Since you are supportive of full disclosure. Let's start with the Imperial Court and how much money it has spent feeding, transporting and accommodating you over the past 24 months.

This comment board is interactive and your readers are waiting............

Bradley MacPhereson says:

At least Nicole got it right, Father's Day is Sunday. Should have been a hint for the new editor. Do you know anything about the community? It's the San Diego LGBT Center, not the GLBT Center. Come on new GLT editor...get it together! Great decision Portantino!

Jun 18, 2010 10:43 PM
Steve S. says:

Nicole recently attacked SDNN and former GLT editor Joey Pena for an article written about the GLT. I don't see what the problem was with this article since she is one to talk about attacks. This is the U.S. What happened to freeedom of speech? Oh, and by the way Nicole , you are wrong in saying SDNN was closing its doors and Joey is out of a job. It certainly doesn't look that way. Weeks later SDNN continues to be updated daily and Joey has a new article posted: Reconciling gay and "God: Preaching love and speaking out against ex-gay groups."
You may wish it'd close its doors, as many do with your publication. But unfortanately, like bad reruns you continue to stick around. I look forward to another option for our community as GAY SAN DIEGO debuted today. But I'm sure you'll be knocking them sometime in the future too!

Pearlie says:

Just how have the minorities become the
majority? Let us start with all those
illegal immigrants who are mostly from
Third World countries. Next, there's
welfare users who are also mostly from
3rd World countries. Now, despite the
much ballyhooed "welfare reform" that
Bill Clinton boasts giving us, only one
in five recipients works for their such
benefits.

Now add to that the higher birth rate
of minority mothers than white mothers
that are free in county hospitals, and
are listed under unreimbursed medical
costs, is it any wonder why there are
so many minorities living here? Or that
their huge debt layed at the feet of
mostly white tax payers made California
go broke?

Yes, demographics have changed. So much
so that the overly taxed are fleeing
and going elsewhere to make a decent
living. Unfortunately, they are being
replaced by more low achievers whom a
bankrupt public education system fails
each day. The tax eaters have replaced
the tax payers.

What it all adds up to are Doomsday
Demographics.

Jun 19, 2010 3:28 PM
Sebastian says:

Oh well, Pearlie, there's always Sarah Palins Alaska if the changing demographics bother you in the Golden State, or North Dakota!

And, this is why we need Nicole to encourage the glbt community to start outreach and dealing with the changing demographics as those who want "their " America back show they are stuck in the past, and, this country will be just fine with the changing demographics, no matter how much the fear mongers say otherwise!

Jun 20, 2010 5:56 PM
Pearlie says:

Well said, Sebastian. But someone
named Mario Obledo beat you to it when
he said: "California is becoming a
Hispanic state and those who don't like
it should leave." Mario belonged to one
of those ethnic Hispanic organizations
that preached nativism. He so impressed
Gov. Jerry Brown he was appointed the
state's Secretary of Health, Education
and Welfare by Brown. So your kind of
thinking is not new. Keep talking your
love-it-or-leave it philosophy and you
might get Jerry's ear and give you the
office of Third World Czar. That is if
the people are dumb enough to vote him
into office.

Mike says:

Now that Sharon and Kelly Osbourne have one of your crowns did you tell them. That with the value of their crown and 2 dollars will can get them a coffee at 7/11

Jun 21, 2010 10:54 AM
Bill says:

WOW for once I agree with Nicole...we all should be questioning non-profits...it is amazing how and what some spend their budgets on.

For me, the big one that Nicole and others should target is the LGBT Center of San Diego. Why is no one talking about the issues that mean the most to the community anymore? Why do we not care? Why do we not demand accountability? The time has come people to get up off our butts and start asking the hard questions and demand change.

Does no one care that donations to the LGBT Center are drastically down (way more than the national average give the economic conditions).

Does no one care that volunteers no longer want to volunteer there because the staff devalues them and treats them like crap?

Does no one care that The LGBT Center is managed by cold heartless out of touch people who care more about themselves than the organization they work for?

Nicole...and others...start pushing for change at The LGBT Center. Demand answers to the questions we all have.

Why is Jeff Wergeles still there...he is a shady character at best and I would rather throw my money out the car window than give it to him...Delores kept him but let go SEVERAL incredible development staff over the past year because Jeff is under contract and rather than pay him to go away, she would rather watch donations drop and the image of The LGBT Center get worse...sad.

Patrick Loose is another great employee...out of touch, rude to volunteers and donors, and messed up on several grants that cost The LGBT Center money that is needed to serve the public, yet he still has a job. Rather than fire him, Delores simply created a new position to "save" her little darling rather than hold him accountable for his actions. Someone needs to remove this meth head from his position!

Carlos Marquez...young...inexperienced...spends way too much time on Grnder and Adam4Adam...someone should check his internet usage and see how much time he spends trying to get dick instead of his job!

Donnie Luehring...YIKES...can we say meth-head? Crazy, out of control...and very disorganized...yet he still keeps his job. His events are only successful because they are supported by a GREAT group of volunteers (of those left that have not run away from him and/or the organization) and because the community supports those events because of the impact they have on the community.

Travis Anderson...only going to say wow, he is just a bitter, jaded, fat queen that doesn't like life or anyone around him...he scared off a number of volunteers yet he still has a job.

Then there is the Board...ha...what a joke of a group that is...they'll never change anything because no one holds anyone accountable.

I hate to say this folks, but The LGBT Center is such a mess, it is sad to see and sad to watch what happens to those that depends on services from The LGBT Center as their means to deliver those services dwindles away...hold them accountable, reform the staff...demand more answers and transparency!

On a positive note...there are some incredible staff members there...Terry...Connor...Carolina...Jane...but that's about it folks!

Jay says:

Just read an amazing article on Fred Karger in the excellent Gay San Diego.

While Nicole spews trivia, real journalists are writing article worth reading

Jun 21, 2010 4:49 PM
Sebastian says:

Actually Pearlie, I wasn't saying leave the sate, but, if the changing demographics bother anyone who lives in the Southwest, they should go to a state that isn't diverse, there are still lots of them. People on the fringe are using divisiveness for votes, all one has to do is look at Arizona, where they had to sell the capital building for coins and then lease them back and nary a peep from the citizens, bring on the hate of Mexicans that they all benefit from and they are all for that.

There is already enough hatred in this country due to race, sexuality, disability and such, what's the big deal with trying to build bridges across cultural, racial lines as Nicole said??

And, oddly enough, the fringe seeems to forget the whole of the Southwest was Hispanic from the jump after Spain took it from the Native Americans, if anyone should be bothered by the changing demographics, it should still be the Native Americans.

Jun 22, 2010 7:31 AM
Toni for Assembly? says:

Are there any worthy Democrats willing to run as a write-in candidate against Toni Atkins for State Assembly?

Please...someone, step up to the plate.

Otherwise I'll be forced to vote for a Republican for the first time in ages. (At least Ralph Denney is a gay GOP, but more importantly...he doesn't have Toni Atkins' bad track record.)

Jun 22, 2010 9:24 AM
Mitchell says:

I won't step into the Gay Center as long
as Delores Jacobs runs the place. No
bingo nights, no accountability, no
polite or competent staff...only this
incompetent and politically-driven
woman rewarding her cronies.

Get lost, Jacobs, I say. Leave and
bring back the good old days.

Jun 22, 2010 1:13 PM
Pearlie says:

Yes, Sebastian. The American Southwest
was once Hispanic.
And New York once belonged to England
and if you lived there you'd be
suggesting that unhappy non-Anglos
should leave NY.
Mexico sold us California for $10
million. Now they want it back?

Why should I leave the country I was
born in to parents legally here?
What's wrong with YOU leaving and
taking racist Obledo's advice?

I object to demographice created by
unnatural growth. Human smuggling
is NOT natural growth. In fact, I
would term it artificial growth.

By the way, are you Hispanic?

Jun 23, 2010 1:09 PM
Kevin says:

For the first time in long time I see a glimmer of hope for this community. Some of your comments have focused on "issues of true import." I hope y'all have noticed that miss nickey has not refuted anything I have written in the last 4 or 5 years. He is too busy telling us we need to "build bridges..." Yet any of us can walk into any "gay" resturant, bar or dance club and experience every combination of "cultural mixing" there is. Divide and conquer...not like I've never seen that before!!!!!
