The community of Hillcrest is home to a bustling microcosm of shops, restaurants and a proud community of GLBT residents. Many are happy to call the community that rests under its arched, neon “Hillcrest” sign their home. Sunday, August 8th, the community is reminded as to why they love their fair, little part of San Diego.
The Hillcrest Business Association is proud to present this year’s Hillcrest CityFest. A proud and joyous event that will play host to a celebration of the community and its spirit.
Since its unofficial inception in 1984, Hillcrest has played host to this cherished event. Attracting 150,000+ attendees each year. Bringing together the best of community, its members, live music, games, activities, over 250 vendors, a beer garden and live music.
In 1940, in the midst of a World War, the small community of Hillcrest hoisted its well-recognized neon sign for the first time. The sign hung proudly for over 40 years until time, nature and general wear and tear forced the city to taken it down. But not for long.
Through the generous donations from volunteers and community members, they were able to raise over $4,000 to put toward its restoration. And on August 26, 1984, the community proudly cheered and raved as its neon label was returned to its rightful place above University and Fifth Avenue. Since its triumphant return, the community has hosted CityFest to unify and celebrate this community’s rich history.
This year, marking its 26th anniversary, Hillcrest once again celebrates with all the shops, amenities and fun atmosphere its been known for. And the Hillcrest sign will be symbolically re-lighted once more.
CityFest will host a plethora of community vendors whom will have their food, arts and crafts, and general shopping items for sale. Other events will include games and activities spread out across the community. Live music headliners will include performances by The Tighten Ups, Circa Now, The Burning of Rome, and Republic of Letters. Others such artists include Pauhana, Antioquia, Sue Palmer, Ultra Violent Lens, F.U.Z.Z. and Wendy Bailey.
This annual event could not be held without the support from Hillcrest CityFest sponsors: Effen Vodka, Coors, Rock Star Energy Drink, CityBeat, Uptown News, Gay San Diego, HillQuest, The City of San Diego’s Commission for Arts and Culture, The Gay and Lesbian Times, San Diego Sun Coast, Golden Lodestar Productions and Consolidated Concepts Printing.
